Steph Dancing in Europe

Getting ready for Europe

Getting ready for Europe

Update from Stephanie Grobbelaar – May 2016

I have just completed a five-week tour of ballet auditions dancing in both the UK and Europe.  To audition in Europe, you must submit a video showcasing technique and body type in order.  I submitted DVD’s to seven schools and was offered five auditions.

The trip was an enjoyable experience. It provided me with the opportunity to meet fellow dancers of similar age from around the globe and evaluate the level of standard.  I have discovered that Europe and the UK ballet standard is of a very high quality.

I was lucky enough to spend three days at Princess Grace of Monaco Dance Akademie Boarding School and experience firsthand the daily life of the school.  Even more exciting was that I was given a private lesson with The Director Luca Masala, who subsequently invited me to their Summer School later this year.  From the five Schools that I auditioned at I was offered the following:

  • 2016 – offered (taZ) Zürich Switzerland
  • 2016 – offered Munich Ballet School
  • 2016 – offered Elmhurst Ballet School (Birmingham Ballet)
  • 2016 – Invited to Akademie de Danse Princesse Grace, MONTECARLO Summer School

Receiving offers was very exciting. I am very appreciative that the Sanctuary Lakes Foundation sponsored me allowing me to pursue this opportunity.

On my return, I have met with the Director of my current school, Australian Conservatoire of Ballet (ACB) and she has encouraged me to spend another year in Australia completing my Advanced Diploma in Dance and Year 10 before joining an international school for my A-levels and further dance education.  I will, therefore, be working on improving and refining my technical dance skills even further before re-auditioning for four specific schools that I would love to be part of in 2017.  I will be submitting an application to the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition for 2017.

The Road to Rio de Janeiro for Luke Matthews

Luke Matthews - the Road to RIO

Luke Matthews – the Road to RIO

On April 2 Luke Matthews booked his place in the Australian Olympic team by winning the 800m national title in Sydney. Luke has experienced a golden period of form recently punctuated with the national title win. Luke is now in Europe preparing him for the Rio Olympics.

The Sanctuary Lakes Foundation “discovered” recently that Luke was eligible for support and have since provided him financial assistance to ease the burden on him and his family. Luke hails from the Western Suburbs of Melbourne, which makes him eligible for support by the Foundation, where he and his family have pursued his dream.

The Foundation is very proud to be able to provide Luke with support in any way we can. We wish him all the best in the Olympics and his future pursuits, and will eagerly follow his progress to Rio.

Good luck Luke.

  • Daniel Valente Working Hard

Sanctuary Lakes Foundation graduate Daniel Valente is working hard in 2016 to replicate and hopefully better his order of merit ranking of 2015. Last year, Daniel, DV to just about everyone, finished 18th in the order of merit on the Australian PGA. This was a standout in his relatively short professional golfing career and a credit to his dedication and hard work.

I recently caught up with DV on the range at Sanctuary Lakes before heading off to various parts of Australia and Asia. He was working hard on distance control of his wedges, setting witches hats at various distances and hitting different shots to the different distances. It was great to watch such control, the ball flight, and the sound the shots made. They were totally different to the shots I made.

Anyway, go hard DV. Believe in yourself in the way that the Foundation believes in you. We look forward to a breakthrough win soon.

You can follow DV’s successes on the PGA web site @ http://www.pga.org.au. The most recent stories on DV can be found at Stories on DV at the PGA.

Cody Shanahan – Foundation Cadet of the Year

During the recent annual Foundation golf day dinner, Cody Shanahan was proclaimed the Foundation’s Cadet of the Year for his outstanding achievements throughout 2015.

Cody has participated in athletics for about 11 years with his performance peaking in the last three years. He has competed at national level in cross country and, track and field in different places in Australia. The hard training has paid off with personal best (PB) time in 3KM (8:51) and 1500M (4:08). Cody concluded 2015 on a high note with strong results in Cross Country. Competing in the Victorian team at the national titles in Melbourne, he finished 24th in the 6KM event in a PB time of 19:10; his team were 3rd overall, and 2nd in the relays. A great result overall.

Cody’s goal is to compete for Australia in global meets.

For his achievement Cody was presented a cheque for $500 at the golf day dinner by Pam Smith (wife of the co-founder, the late Allan Smith).

Congratulations Cody! The Foundation looks forward to seeing your thrive throughout 2016.
